John Canning, Technical Evangelist, Microsoft Windows eHome Division. John Canning plays a major role in Microsoft's Windows eHome Division, a newly developed group within Microsoft whose mission is to extend the PC's capabilities to deliver simple and affordable connected home experiences to everyday consumers. Canning currently leads internal and external evangelism for eHome. As technical evangelist, Canning works external third parties in the areas of media and data distribution, DRM, content, and services. He is dynamic contributor to eHome's goal of developing new technologies that enable consumers to enjoy personalized entertainment, communications and information experiences in ways that enrich and simplify consumer's home environment.
Prior to joining the Windows eHome Division Canning served as third-party product manager for Microsoft's TV Platforms Group. In that position he worked with companies to develop and manage compelling new network services for cable operators and to help them increase operational efficiencies and customer service.
Before he came to Microsoft in 1997, Canning held various marketing and engineering positions with Scientific-Atlanta, Inc, where he participated in product development and implementation of cable modem systems as applications architect and systems engineer.
Canning earned a master's degree in information design and technology and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, both from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a member of the SCTE, CTAM, NCTA, and ACM. His expertise in networking, systems, and applications has earned him speaking engagements at industry conferences and events including, Western Show, MILIA, IDG's Digital Spectrum and Broadband Home.
