Edward A. Merlis

Senior Vice President, U.S. Telecom Association

Ed Merlis joined USTA in September 2003 after thirteen years at the Air Transport Association, the principal trade association of the major U.S. airlines. During his years at ATA he served in a variety of positions; most recently as Senior Vice President, Legislative and International Affairs.

No stranger to telecom issues, Merlis was Vice President, Government Affairs at the National Cable Television Association during its successful effort to obtain enactment of the Cable Communications Policy Act of 1984. Subsequently, he was President, Cable Affiliate Division of Telaction Corporation, a wholly-owned J.C. Penney development company that built an interactive television venture in the Chicago area in the late 1980's.

His Washington experience also includes nearly a decade on the staff of several U.S. Senate Committees including the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation ­ where he was Staff Director in 1977, and the Senate Committee on Appropriations ­ where he was Chief of Staff in 1978.
